A smaller competition does not have to use the same entry ceiling as a larger one. The Royal Kennel Club's October notice of approved Rally changes lowers the minimum permitted cap for a class from 40 entries to 20, effective 1 January 2027. Organisers can still choose a higher cap. For handlers planning next year's diary, the actual schedule remains the place to check the limit.
Read a cap as a limit, not a place promised
The official 2027 Rally amendments change the minimum an organiser may set. They do not say every class will admit only 20 dogs, nor do they confirm that an event has opened for entries. Before making travel arrangements, distinguish the published cap, the closing date and your accepted entry.
Equipment changes also concern the dog's fit
The same notice removes the maximum height for a hoop, explaining that the change follows concerns about taller dogs. It also covers other competition rules, including progression and refunds. This is an approved future sports-rule update, not a new UK law or a set of home-training instructions. The notice gives 1 January 2027 as the effective date.
Keep the dog's record with the schedule
For an experienced team, a useful preparation step is to put the dog's current eligibility record beside the specific competition schedule and the relevant rule edition. If something does not agree, ask the organiser before entering. A general news summary cannot decide an individual dog's class or settle a particular refund dispute.
Newcomers can start with the Royal Kennel Club's Rally information. Read the activity description before assuming a familiar word means the same thing across different dog sports.
Plan the visit around the dog
Competition paperwork and everyday care solve different problems. Our grooming appointment checklist can help with a separate care visit; a directory listing does not establish competition expertise. For the journey itself, see our original car-journey commentary.
