A question about a dog's health can now arrive at a veterinary appointment with an AI-generated answer attached. A British Veterinary Association announcement dated 23 October 2026 puts that conversation, as well as practices' own use of AI, on the professional agenda. For dog owners, the useful question is how to discuss an online claim without mistaking it for an examination of the dog.

What the BVA has announced

The BVA announcement describes member resources including a workplace policy template, a charter for clients and videos about discussing AI with clients. The toolkit is restricted to BVA members. GroomNear has reviewed the public announcement, not the restricted downloads or videos, and does not assess their effectiveness.

A survey estimate is not a dog-owner census

BVA reports that vets in clinical practice estimated around 15% of their clients used AI in animal care. That is a professional estimate about clients and animals, not a measured proportion of UK dog owners. The announcement does not establish how frequently dog owners rely on these tools or whether a particular answer is accurate.

Make the consultation about the individual dog

Our practical reading is that an online answer is something to discuss, rather than a verdict to defend. A useful conversation can distinguish what someone has observed in their dog from what a tool has suggested. An apparently confident explanation does not show that the system has examined the animal or knows its full history.

This is a report about professional resources and the owner–vet conversation, not a diagnosis, triage service or recommendation of an AI product. No particular tool has been tested for this article.

Keep grooming and clinical decisions distinct

For a grooming visit, agree the service and handover directly with the business. Our first-appointment checklist helps organise that separate conversation. A groomer listing, an ownership check and a polished online answer each answer different questions; none should be presented as veterinary review of a dog's health.
