A farm dog from the country around Bern
The Bernese Mountain Dog developed around Bern in Switzerland, where farm dogs guarded property, drove cattle and pulled loads. It was first known as the Dürrbächler, after a local hamlet and inn. Breeders founded the Dürrbach club in 1907 before the Bernese name became established. The FCI's Berner Sennenhund is the same breed known here by its common English name.
Living with the individual dog
Its substantial frame needs thoughtful everyday arrangements: room to turn, a comfortable resting place and handling that does not rely on lifting the dog. Ask about the individual's energy and confidence. A large, affectionate-looking companion still benefits from gentle training and gradual introductions to unfamiliar situations.
Character and behaviour
The standard describes an attentive, self-confident dog devoted to its people. These general traits do not guarantee behaviour or suitability for every household.
Breed descriptions are broad tendencies. An individual dog's behaviour also reflects experience, training and circumstances.
Care in daily life
Brush in sections and pay attention behind the ears, around the trousers and where equipment rubs. Introduce a non-slip grooming surface and take breaks. Discuss the actual coat condition with a groomer before choosing tools or a maintenance schedule.
Care depends on the individual dog. If you notice a skin or health problem, speak to a vet.
