What a commendation records about search dog Jarvis
A PDSA award record can tell us the name of the animal recognised, the kind of award and the stated reason. It does not, by itself, tell the complete story of every deployment or mean that an award was announced today.
PDSA lists search dog Jarvis as a recipient of its Commendation in August 2026. In a September account of a presentation event, the charity identified him as an urban search and rescue dog associated with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Commendation recognises his dedication in life-threatening emergencies; it is a commendation, not the PDSA Gold Medal.
The fire service described Jarvis as a Cocker Spaniel who retired from active duty in 2024 after a decade working with the service and search-and-rescue teams. Its October 2026 account says he still accompanied the team on training exercises. The service lists deployments including the Bow crane collapse, the Lewes Castle wall collapse and the Jersey explosion. Those are the service's account of his work, not evidence for an invented scene or a claim about the outcome of a particular search.
How to read the record
The distinction between an award date, a ceremony and the publication date of a later account matters. PDSA gives August 2026 as Jarvis's award date; the charity's event report is dated 17 September, while the fire service's retrospective is dated 3 October. None is a new 7 November award announcement. For readers interested in how honours differ, our existing guide explains the wider award categories.
