An animal award tells you which work or relationship its issuer chose to recognise. It is not a measure of every dog with a similar role. The PDSA Commendation roll of honour is a useful example: the page names dogs whose companionship, loyalty, support or service made a particular difference. Reading the category and the award date is more informative than calling every recipient a medal winner.

The Commendation has its own purpose

PDSA describes the Commendation as recognition for devotion, loyalty and companionship beyond ordinary expectations. Its dog roll lists Wellbeing Dog Bubba with an August 2026 award for emotional support and enriching others' lives. That is a recorded Commendation, not a newly announced November result and not evidence that all wellbeing dogs perform the same work.

The roll also names Assistance Dog Lilly and police, search and family dogs. Those different roles are a reason to read each entry on its own terms. PDSA's short roll entries do not establish a dog's full history, qualifications, present working status or the circumstances of every action. Where a recipient's country or organisation is given, retain that context rather than treating the whole list as UK awards to UK dogs.

A medal recognises a different category

PDSA calls its Gold Medal the civilian counterpart to the Dickin Medal, which concerns animals serving in military conflict. The Gold Medal roll records Metropolitan Police dog Kaiser with an award dated 5 September 2023 for life-saving devotion to duty. The Dickin Medal roll records RAF Police dog Hertz with an award dated 22 February 2022 for service connected with Afghanistan in 2013. The award dates and the underlying service dates are different facts.

There is also a PDSA Order of Merit, for outstanding devotion to an owner, handler or wider society. Its roll records UK tobacco-detection dogs Yoyo and Scamp, each awarded on 2 October 2024 for a ten-year career. A Commendation, an Order of Merit and a medal are therefore distinct named PDSA honours; one label cannot be substituted for another. These examples describe PDSA's records, not a GroomNear ranking of animals or handlers.

How to read a dog-award announcement

Start with the issuer's own entry. Check the exact honour, recipient, award date, organisation and stated reason; then separate a historical action from the date of the award or a later article about it. A public roll can be updated, so do not infer that its first visible entries are today's winners. Photographs, speeches and testimony need their own rights and factual checks before anyone republishes them.

For UK readers, this is a way to appreciate working and companion dogs without turning a compelling headline into an endorsement or a claim about another animal's welfare. Our assistance-dog partnership feature discusses giving a working team space in everyday life. A grooming appointment raises different questions; plan the service directly with the groomer, and ask a vet about health concerns.
