Dog care often involves conversations with more than one member of a veterinary practice. A renewed agreement between the British Veterinary Association and British Veterinary Nursing Association puts that teamwork back on the UK professional agenda. It is an organisational announcement, with the practical effects still to be demonstrated.

What was announced

In its 15 October announcement, BVA says the two associations renewed their strategic alliance through a memorandum signed at BVNA Congress in Telford on 10 October 2026. It identifies animal welfare, support through veterinary-market changes and advocacy for reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act as areas for joint work.

A commitment is a starting point

The associations describe a shared intention to support vets and veterinary nurses. That is different from evidence that an individual practice has changed its services. The statement does not measure canine health outcomes, appointment access or savings for owners. Calls for legislative reform should also be read as advocacy: this agreement is not itself a new law or a change in what a particular professional is authorised to do.

Make your next conversation clearer

For a dog owner, a useful response is to be clear about the purpose of an appointment. Ask the practice who the appointment is with, what it covers, what information to bring and how questions or follow-up concerns should be raised. These are GroomNear's suggestions for preparing a conversation, rather than a quoted checklist from either association. They do not replace an assessment by the veterinary team.

Keep grooming and clinical care connected

When planning a grooming visit, use our appointment guide to organise questions about the dog's needs. Where a vet has provided relevant instructions, discuss those with the groomer. A directory entry does not establish veterinary qualifications or suitability for an individual animal. The question is what the people caring for your dog need to know, without assuming that a national agreement settles that local conversation.
