A dog microchip can help a professional trace the person responsible for a lost dog, but a number and a usable contact record are different parts of that process. A new professional search service aims to make the lookup stage simpler. For owners, the practical action remains checking the registration they already hold.
A new route for veterinary practices
In its 15 October 2026 announcement, the British Veterinary Association reports that the Association of Microchip Database Operators has launched Single Point of Search, or SPoS. BVA says its first phase gives veterinary teams access across Chipworks, Identi, MyPet, Petlog and PETtrac, with further databases expected later. This describes an initial service scope, rather than proof that every UK record is searchable through it today.
Owners still have a separate job
The current GOV.UK microchipping page says owners are responsible for keeping their pet's information current and should contact their database company to update it. The page also provides the government list of databases and a route for checking where a microchip is registered. A change in a professional lookup system does not itself confirm that an individual registration is complete or that an old telephone number has been replaced.
Check the route before sharing information
Start from your existing registration documents or the official guidance, rather than an unexpected request for payment. GOV.UK warns that requests from other databases can be scams. If you are unsure which registration a message concerns, establish that before responding. GroomNear does not need your chip number, address, registration certificate or keeper record to explain this development. Do not send those details to the directory or put them in a public comment.
Keep the promise proportionate
The welcome aim is a less fragmented search for veterinary teams. Neither the announcement nor this article measures how quickly a particular lost dog will get home. Coverage, the readable chip and the quality of the stored contact record are separate questions. Before an appointment, our grooming appointment guide can help organise a conversation with the business; a groomer listing does not establish access to this portal, microchip-scanning services or availability.
