PDSA's 2026 Animal Wellbeing report asks what owners know about the care their pets need. Its findings offer a useful prompt for dog owners to review everyday routines, including comfort at grooming appointments. They are survey findings, not a diagnosis of any individual dog or proof that a particular routine causes a behaviour.
What PDSA measured
In its 12 October summary, PDSA says 21% of pet owners reported doing no research before getting a pet, and 32% of dog owners reported walking their dog for 30 minutes or less a day. These are different surveyed groups; neither figure says how much exercise every dog needs. PDSA's 2026 report overview explains the wider focus on knowledge, welfare needs and responsible dog ownership.
Turn a broad finding into a useful question
Review what your own dog needs for movement, mental stimulation, coat care and comfortable handling. Age, health, breed and temperament can change that answer. The report should start a conversation with a vet or suitably qualified professional when you have a concern; it cannot set a universal walking or grooming schedule.
Bring that context to a grooming visit
Tell the groomer about mobility limits, sensitivity to handling, coat tangles or a recent change that could affect the appointment. Ask what parts of the service are planned and how breaks or adjustments are handled. Our first appointment checklist helps organise the discussion, and our gentle coat-care guide explains when tangles need professional help. A groomer can discuss the service; new health symptoms belong with a vet.
Read the survey carefully
PDSA and YouGov survey a nationally representative sample of UK dog, cat and rabbit owners for the annual report. The reported association between walk duration and some behaviours does not establish that shorter walks cause them. Use the findings as questions to explore, and follow advice tailored to your dog.
