The story
Squeak! Patch froze with one front paw in the air. Who had made that sound? He stepped back. Silence. He stepped forward. Squeak! The little noise came from the board beneath his paw.
Patch was a black-and-white spaniel who liked to know how things worked. He sniffed the narrow line between two boards. It smelled of home, not of anything new. He tried the next plank. Nothing. Back to the first. Squeak. So that was its trick.
He looked at the quiet sofa, then at the board. Could it do it twice in a row? One careful tap said yes. A second tap said yes again. Patch's ears lifted. He had found the smallest instrument in the house.
His soft green ball waited beside the rug. Patch nudged it across the floor. It rolled over the special board without a sound. He followed it and put down one paw. Squeak! The ball wasn't heavy enough. This floor seemed to be speaking only to him.
Patch's person came in with a cup of tea and stopped at the doorway. Patch tapped the board once, as if to show what he had discovered. His person smiled. They pressed the plank with a hand. Squeak. Now they both knew the secret.
They brought over a small woven mat and settled it on the floor. Patch watched every corner go flat. He tried a paw on the mat. The sound was still there, but much softer. He tried another step. Only a tiny peep answered.
For a moment he walked around the mat and listened to the quiet boards beside it. Then he carried his green ball back, lay down on the soft weave, and rested his chin beside the toy.
Later, when his person crossed the room, the mat gave a little squeak underfoot. Patch opened one eye. The floor had not forgotten its song. It had just learned to sing more quietly.
