The story

The red mitten sailed past Bracken's nose and landed in a puddle. He stopped so suddenly that one paw hung in the air.

It wasn't his mitten. It had been pegged to the basket by the garden gate, ready to be collected. Now the wind was carrying it down the path.

Bracken hurried after it. The mitten slid under a bench. He crouched, stretched out his nose and gave it a careful sniff. Then, with a soft tug, he pulled it into the open.

Just as he lifted it, another gust caught the basket's little paper label. Away it fluttered, straight through the gate. Bracken watched it go. The mitten was safe, but how would anyone know where it belonged?

He carried the mitten to the gate and set it down. The label had settled beside a flowerpot, just beyond his reach. Bracken nudged the gate with his shoulder. It swung a little, then stuck against a fallen twig.

He tried his paw. The twig rolled, but the gate didn't move. So Bracken picked up the twig and carried it away. This time, when he nudged the gate, it opened with a gentle creak.

He fetched the label, then trotted back for the mitten. His person found him at the basket, carefully placing both treasures together. She tied the label securely to the handle and clipped the mitten beneath it.

Later, a neighbour arrived to collect the basket. Bracken watched the red mitten disappear safely into a coat pocket. Then he spotted the little twig on the path and picked it up again.

His person laughed. Apparently, Bracken's work wasn't quite finished. Follow GroomNear for another little dog story.
