The pinwheel that stopped

Lumi, a Samoyed in a sunny courtyard, notices that a little pinwheel has stopped even though the leaves near the gate still move. Read this original GroomNear dog story and watch the narrated video below.

The story

The pinwheel stopped. Lumi froze with one paw in the air. Its yellow and teal blades had been whirling a moment ago. Why were they still now?

She leaned closer. A pale ribbon beside the flowerpot lifted and fell, but the pinwheel did not move. Lumi's ears tipped forward. Something in this little corner was different.

Across the courtyard, leaves flickered beside the wooden gate. Lumi trotted over and sniffed the narrow gap. Cool air brushed her whiskers. She turned back towards the quiet pinwheel.

She tried the middle of the courtyard. Her fluffy coat stirred there too. At the flowerpot, everything was calm again. Lumi stepped between the two places twice, pausing each time to look at the bright blades.

Her person came out carrying a watering can. Lumi looked from the gate to the pot, then gave the pinwheel one very serious stare. Her person set down the can and followed her gaze.

They lifted the little pot from behind the sheltering flowers. Lumi waited well clear while it crossed the paving. Beside the closed gate, the ribbon fluttered more freely. The pinwheel gave one shy turn.

Lumi's head tilted. One turn became two, then a gentle circle of yellow and teal. She took a step towards it, stopped, and watched the colour travel round and round. Nothing needed chasing.

Her person watered the flowers while Lumi settled on the warm stones. The gate stayed closed. Leaves whispered overhead, the little wheel kept turning, and the courtyard felt a bit bigger than it had that morning.

When the breeze faded, the blades slowed again. Lumi did not mind. She had found the place where the wind liked to visit, and she knew it might come back. GroomNear. Local care, happier dogs. Explore more stories at GroomNear dot com.
