The story
The red umbrella sprang open with a whump. Elsie, a brindle whippet, jumped sideways, then stared at it as though it had grown legs.
Her person was setting a little table in the garden. The sky had turned silver, and rain was beginning to tap the windows. The umbrella was meant to shelter the table. But it had opened inside the kitchen, and now it would not close.
Elsie tilted her head. The handle twitched in her person's hands. A tiny red loop should have kept the umbrella folded. It was missing. Without it, the great round canopy kept pushing open.
A sudden gust pushed the back door. The umbrella rolled across the floor. Elsie followed it, nose low, until she spotted a red thread caught beneath the edge of the striped mat.
She sniffed. The thread led under the mat, but it did not pull free. Her person lifted one corner. There lay the little loop, tangled around a wooden peg that had fallen from the table.
Elsie nudged the peg towards the open hand. The loop came free. Her person slipped it back around the umbrella's handle, and with a soft click the canopy folded at last. Elsie gave it one careful sniff, just to make sure it would stay that way.
But just as they carried it outside, the first proper shower began. The little garden table was already wet. The afternoon Elsie had been waiting for could not happen there.
She stood at the doorway, watching bright drops dance on the stones. Then she looked back at the striped mat. It was dry, warm, and wide enough for both of them. She stepped onto it and settled down with an expectant little sigh.
Her person laughed softly, brought the small table in and spread a cloth over the mat. Elsie watched each piece find a place: a cushion, a book, and her favourite soft toy. The toy needed no invitation. Elsie drew it close and rested her chin beside it.
The umbrella stood folded by the door. Outside, the rain kept tapping. Inside, Elsie settled beside her person, her long legs tucked neatly beneath her.
The plan had changed, but the good part had stayed: a quiet afternoon together. GroomNear. Local care, happier dogs. More dog stories are waiting at GroomNear dot com.
