Two Fox Terriers with shared roots
The FCI's Smooth Fox Terrier history describes the British origins shared by both coat forms, with a standard drawn up in 1876. The Wire has its own modern FCI entry, number 169, rather than being defined simply by a fashionable haircut.
Historical work with quarry helps explain why alertness and quick reactions are central to the breed ideal. It is context for understanding a modern companion, not a promise about how any particular terrier will behave around people or animals.
Crisp texture and a balanced outline
The coat combines very wiry outer hair with softer undercoat. Facial hair and brows contribute to the recognisable expression, while the body should remain balanced and free to move. White is the principal colour, with black or tan markings described by the standard.
A lively mind needs more than exercise
Reward checking in, waiting and settling as well as active exploration. Manage access to small animals and introduce unfamiliar dogs thoughtfully. Quick movement and boldness are breed ideals; the individual dog's confidence and previous learning determine how care and training should begin.
Plan wire-coat maintenance early
Check through the beard, underside and leg hair before small tangles become tight. Discuss texture and maintenance goals with a knowledgeable groomer instead of assuming one technique suits every coat. Grooming should not depend on painful pulling, and changes in skin or handling comfort deserve proper investigation.
