A foothill variety with its own identity

The FCI places this Pyrenean Sheepdog variety mainly in the French foothills. Its historical account cites Bernard Sénac-Lagrange's 1927 description of a dog appreciated by horse dealers and cattle drovers. Distinctive features had already been recorded in an appendix to the standard during the 1920s.

Its separate FCI number, 138, is useful when researching the breed. General photographs labelled only Pyrenean Sheepdog may show the long-haired variety instead, so the face and source identification both matter.

Smooth face, useful body coat

The body retains a working coat, with the greatest length around the neck and withers. The facial distinction should not be confused with a close clip applied to a long-haired dog. The natural outline is agile and functional rather than heavily sculpted.

An attentive working companion

The standard's lively, biddable ideal sits alongside possible wariness of unfamiliar people. Thoughtful social experiences, reward-based training and opportunities to switch off are a better starting point than expecting constant sociability. Ask about the individual dog's experience of busy environments.

Care in daily life

Feel through the longer coat after outdoor activity, especially around the neck, legs and harness contact points. Remove light debris gently and stop if the skin is sore or a knot cannot be eased without pulling. Introduce grooming equipment gradually so the dog can remain comfortable and engaged.
