A North African sighthound

The Sloughi has a long association with North Africa, with Morocco responsible for the FCI standard. The official account describes a regional history extending over centuries, but does not supply a documented pedigree for every ancient depiction of a lean hound. Similarity in art is not enough to establish a continuous registered lineage.

Its identity combines purposeful hunting with close attachment to familiar people. The modern FCI entry recognises a single short-haired variety. It should therefore be distinguished from feathered sighthounds and from other North African breeds, rather than represented by a generic elegant dog merely because the outline looks similar.

Fine hair over a lean outline

A very short, fine, dense jacket reveals the athletic frame. Sandy shades may carry a dark mask, mantle, brindling or overlay. Dark markings can substantially change the appearance, so the photograph represents one dog rather than the entire recognised palette. Neither visible leanness nor a graceful stance proves health or working ability.

Home comforts and pursuit interests

The standard describes a dog attached to its owner that also retains hunting interests and appreciates household comfort. A settled indoor pose does not demonstrate reliable recall around wildlife. Arrange secure exploration and rewarding attention, and let the individual's experiences guide introductions to other animals and unfamiliar people.

Gentle handling of a close jacket

Use tools that do not scrape the skin and introduce foot checks gradually. Stable footing and calm preparation can make an appointment easier to plan. Tell a groomer about sensitivities or reluctance to stand, and seek assessment for persistent irritation or pain rather than assuming that short hair makes every procedure effortless.
