A breed shaped across the Middle East

The Saluki's history covers varied Middle Eastern landscapes and regional hunting traditions. The FCI explains that different communities maintained dogs suited to local terrain and quarry, making some variation in type an expected feature. One narrowly uniform modern silhouette should not erase that broader cultural background.

Dogs reaching Europe came from different areas and conditions. A British standard established in 1923 aimed to encompass the original range of types. Ancient artistic associations are interesting, but they do not establish an exact complete pedigree for every modern registered Saluki.

Smooth and feathered varieties

The body coat is fine and silky. Feathered individuals have longer hair in particular areas, while smooth Salukis lack those furnishings. The red smooth dog pictured here is therefore not a feathered dog clipped short; it illustrates a recognised variety with its own natural appearance.

Independence alongside companionship

The standard describes dignity, intelligence and reserve towards unfamiliar people. A sighthound's interest in movement still needs planning even when it settles calmly indoors. Reward attention, provide secure opportunities for activity and assess introductions to animals and grooming equipment through the individual.

Gentle care of fine hair

Check equipment contact points and feet, adding careful attention to feathering where present. Avoid scraping lean areas or pulling fine furnishings. Explain standing tolerance and sensitivities to a groomer, and investigate pain or skin changes instead of expecting an elegant dog to tolerate a prolonged finish.
