A working history behind a famous outline

The Rough Collie's FCI account relates the modern breed to the working collies of Scottish shepherds and emphasises its close relationship with the Smooth Collie. They share relatively recent stock, while carrying separate FCI entries today: 156 for Rough and 296 for Smooth. Coat differences deserve their own care discussions.

The standard also mentions more distant ancestry theories, but those should not become a complete documented pedigree from ancient times. The clearer modern story is selection from pastoral dogs into a recognisable long-coated form. Its familiar companion image should not erase that active working context.

Look beneath the mane

The intended outline is balanced, active and free from cumbersome heaviness. A dense mane and flowing hair can make the dog look larger, while a comparatively smooth face helps create its recognisable expression. A portrait illustrates appearance but cannot reveal the condition of the skin or coat underneath.

Ask practical questions about the individual rather than assuming a popular family-dog image predicts behaviour. How does the dog respond to visitors, movement and grooming equipment? What helps it settle? Broad friendly wording in a standard does not remove the need for observation, teaching and supervision.

Make the coat plan realistic

Discuss loose undercoat, furnishings and any tight areas with a professional before choosing a finish. The owner should understand how to check relevant areas gently and when to ask for help. A long coat does not justify pulling through pain or forcing an extended session on a worried dog.
