A guardian selected in the Carpathians
The FCI account describes the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog as selected from working dogs of the Carpathian Mountains, with usefulness central to that process. Its abundant coat and vigorous appearance are part of a practical guardian identity.
The Romanian kennel organisation drafted a standard in 1981 and revised it in 2002. The Mioritic has its own FCI number, 349, separate from the Romanian Carpathian and Bucovina shepherds. They should not share an interchangeable photograph simply because all are large regional guardians.
A long coat with a firm outer texture
The hair on the head and body is long, harsh and straight, with denser, softer undercoat beneath. The tail is richly furnished and the limbs more closely coated. Pale colours and patches can make loose dirt easy to notice while still hiding tangles near the skin.
Calm is not the same as indiscriminate welcome
The standard combines a stable temperament with vigilance towards strangers. Plan how visitors arrive and how professionals meet the dog, allowing space and a quiet retreat. A guardian should not be pushed into unwanted contact to prove it is friendly.
Make the maintenance achievable
Part the coat gently in small sections rather than brushing only the outer surface. Check behind ears, around the rear and beneath a harness after wet walks. A comfortable routine, suitable working height and planned breaks are more useful than allowing a large grooming task to build up until the dog is uncomfortable.
