The hound of the Sava Valley
The Posavac Hound is associated with Croatia's Sava Valley, reflected in the name Posavski Gonic. The FCI history discusses regional frescoes and written descriptions, including an eighteenth-century manuscript by Bishop Petar Bakic and a nineteenth-century account by Franjo Bertic. These offer cultural context for the working hound.
Artistic resemblance does not establish every modern ancestor, so the older pictures should not become a precise pedigree claim. The first FCI standard was published in 1955, a clearer formal milestone. Posavac is a distinct identity from Croatia's Istrian hounds, despite their shared national hunting context.
Reddish wheaten with defined white
The close glossy jacket combines reddish-wheaten shades with clear white markings in specified areas. Hair becomes slightly longer behind the legs and beneath the tail. The head portrait shows colour and ear shape, but cannot establish the whole body or a particular dog's physical soundness.
A working nose and carrying voice
The standard describes devotion and a moderately lively temperament alongside scent work and a melodic voice. Secure exploration and rewarding attention help owners respond to that background. A friendly description does not prove recall around game or compatibility with every animal encountered outdoors.
Gentle routine checks
Look at feet, equipment contact points and ears after activity, introducing touch in small rewarding steps. Use appropriate tools without scraping the close coat or pulling ear skin. Explain sensitivities to a groomer and investigate persistent irritation rather than assuming a working jacket needs no care.
