A French water-working story

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is FCI breed 114, recorded as a French pointing dog. UKC's history links it with the Picardy Spaniel and discusses possible Barbet and Poodle influence, which should be treated as proposed ancestry rather than a precisely proven recipe.

That account describes a severe shortage after the Second World War and the use of Irish Water Spaniel crosses to preserve the breed. UKC recognised it in 1996. Its water-working role sits alongside pointing and flushing, giving a more useful picture than a decorative spaniel label alone.

The topknot is part of the outline

Curly hair on the top of the skull joins the long ear furnishings, framing a comparatively smooth forehead and muzzle. The body is stocky and vigorous beneath a curly, slightly ruffled coat. This is a distinct natural texture, rather than a haircut borrowed from another breed.

A working dog beyond the curls

The breed account describes a hardy worker with a gentle, affectionate ideal. Plan enjoyable learning and suitable exploration, with secure arrangements around wildlife. Individual confidence, water experience and handling preferences matter more than assuming a spaniel will welcome every situation.

Keep curls comfortable after outings

Feel through the furnishings to find trapped debris and friction tangles. Drying and gentle checks are particularly useful after wet activity. Seek professional help for compacted knots and veterinary advice for painful ears or skin, rather than trying to solve discomfort with repeated brushing.
