The Bak connection in Denmark

The FCI account traces the Old Danish Pointing Dog to Morten Bak, living near Glenstrup between Randers and Hobro, around 1710. It describes selection over generations from local farm dogs and other dogs, leading to the white-and-brown type also called Bakhounds.

Proposed earlier hound ancestry is less certain than that recorded local association. The modern breed is Gammel Dansk Honsehund, FCI number 281, and remains a Danish pointing breed rather than a colour variety of the German pointers.

A sturdy body and a freckled coat

A medium-sized, rectangular, strongly built outline sits beneath short, dense hair. Brown markings range from larger patches to smaller freckles on white. The head is comparatively short and broad, helping distinguish its outline from more finely built pointing breeds.

Measured work and contact

The standard describes a dog that progresses steadily while maintaining contact with its handler. That provides a useful working picture without promising instant recall or an identical activity level in every individual. Reward checking in, calm greetings and settling alongside enjoyable exploration.

Care after practical activity

Gentle grooming gives time to notice scratches, skin changes or rubbing beneath equipment. Check feet and ear surfaces after rural walks without probing. Introduce standing and handling before a professional visit, and agree a routine that reflects the dog's actual condition and experience.
