A Greek hound with a documented working identity

The Hellenic Hound's FCI name is Hellinikos Ichnilatis, number 214. Its standard records Greece as origin and identifies a scent hound able to work alone or in a pack across lowland and difficult mountain ground.

The official valid standard is dated 1959, while the English document's publication date is later. The United Kennel Club recognised the breed in 2006. These are useful documented milestones; they do not establish an unbroken pedigree from ancient Greek dogs, and this profile does not turn broad origin stories into that claim.

A practical black-and-tan jacket

Short dense hair lies close to the body and is slightly hard rather than silky. Black and tan define the familiar appearance, with a small white chest patch tolerated. Other black-and-tan hounds exist, so colour alone cannot identify the breed or prove an individual dog's background.

Voice and scent are part of the picture

The FCI describes endurance, scenting ability and a resonant voice, while the UKC calls the hound lively and keen. Those descriptions explain working priorities better than they predict every household interaction. Secure exploration, rewarding attention and patient introductions should respond to the individual dog.

Keep everyday checks calm

Feet and equipment areas deserve a gentle check after rough-ground activity. Practise standing, collar handling and external ear checks in manageable sessions before appointments. A groomer can plan around previous sensitivities; pain or persistent irritation needs veterinary advice rather than stronger restraint.
