A hound anchored in the Halden district
The Halden Hound is one of Norway's distinct scent-hound breeds. The Norwegian Kennel Club traces organised breeding in the Halden district to the second half of the nineteenth century, including Hans Larsen Bisseberg's work in the1860s.
Local hounds were combined with imported English hound influence. Earlier names included Bisseberghund and Ankerstover; the Haldenstover name appeared in 1938, and separate breed recognition followed in 1952. The modern FCI number 267 should not be confused with the different Norwegian Dunker or Hygen Hound.
Strong without becoming heavy
The standard describes a rectangular, strong hound with a proud outline. Its close, straight outer hair covers dense undercoat, and white, black and tan create the familiar tricolour appearance. Those broad colours are shared with other hounds, so they cannot establish breed identity on their own.
Friendly character alongside hunting interest
The Norwegian Kennel Club describes a friendly disposition and strong desire to hunt. Both belong in the picture: a sociable dog may still become deeply interested in scent outdoors. Secure exploration, rewarding attention and gradual handling practice make more sense than assuming recall or salon confidence from a label.
Keep close-coat care comfortable
Check feet, ears' outer surfaces and equipment contact points after outdoor activity. Introduce standing and body handling in short, positive steps before an appointment. Tell the groomer what the individual already finds easy or difficult, and consult a vet when pain or irritation changes that routine.
