A Brussels stable-dog family

The Griffon Belge, Griffon Bruxellois and Petit Brabancon share a history in the small rough-coated Brussels dog known as the Smousje. These dogs guarded carriages and helped keep rodents out of stables before becoming widely recognised companions.

The shared FCI history describes nineteenth-century influence from the Pug and Ruby King Charles Spaniel. It also records the first Brussels Griffon stud-book entries in 1883 and later royal interest. Shared ancestry does not make the three modern FCI identities interchangeable: this is the Griffon Belge, number 81.

Black or black-and-tan beneath the furnishings

A harsh jacket with undercoat and a furnished face identifies the rough-coated members of the family. In the Griffon Belge, black and black-and-tan are the characteristic colour choices. The red rough-coated Griffon Bruxellois and smooth Petit Brabancon have their own separate entries.

A little companion with individual preferences

The standard describes alertness, attachment and watchfulness. Those qualities can make a small dog an active participant in household life, but they do not prove that every individual enjoys being lifted, crowded or groomed. Offer choices and reward comfortable handling rather than relying on size.

Care around a furnished face

Check facial hair gently and keep food debris from becoming compacted. Ask a groomer about tools for the rough jacket and how to make sessions manageable. Persistent soreness, eye irritation or breathing difficulty needs veterinary advice rather than a cosmetic attempt to hide the signs.
