Gascony and an old pack-hound story

The FCI account associates the Grand Bleu de Gascogne with south-west France and the packs of Gaston Febus, Count of Foix, in the fourteenth century. That is a traditional historical account rather than a complete surviving pedigree from a medieval dog.

The modern breed is FCI number 22, with Gascony central to its identity. It is distinct from the Petit Bleu and other French blue-mottled breeds, whose size, coat texture or working classification can differ despite a shared colour description.

How the slate-blue effect appears

Black and white mottling gives the short, dense coat its overall blue impression. Black head patches and tan details around the eyes and cheeks contribute to the expression. Long ears and a substantial working outline help distinguish the breed beyond colour alone.

A voice designed to carry

The standard highlights a fine nose, persistence and a deep, sonorous voice. Consider how those interests fit the dog's surroundings and routines. Reward calm contact and safe exploration, and ask about the individual rather than treating a calm breed ideal as a promise of silence or easy recall.

Comfortable checks for a large hound

Gentle grooming provides time to notice rubbing or skin changes beneath the short coat. Check feet and ear surfaces after activity without inserting tools. Practise standing on stable footing and keep handling sessions predictable, sharing any sensitivities with a groomer before the appointment.
