Ability shaped the modern breed

The FCI history describes systematic German development from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth. The ideas associated with Hegewald, the pen name of Sigismund von Zedlitz und Neukirch, placed working ability at the centre of selection.

Rough-coated pointing breeds and the German Shorthaired Pointer contributed to that development. The result was intended as a versatile gundog rather than a short-haired pointer given a beard. Its FCI name is Deutsch Drahthaar, number 98.

A protective coat with a clear outline

The harsh, relatively short outer coat and dense undercoat were selected for outdoor work. Strong brows and beard give the face character, but excessive coat should not obscure the body. The photograph is a portrait, so it illustrates head furnishings rather than every aspect of adult conformation.

Purposeful work, considerate training

A breed developed for hunting benefits from structured activity and rewarding contact with its handler. Secure access to wildlife areas and introduce new environments thoughtfully. The standard's balanced temperament describes an ideal, not a substitute for meeting the individual dog.

Care in daily life

Check through the beard, between toes and beneath equipment after outings. Remove loose debris without scraping the skin or dragging through knots. Ask a groomer how to maintain the dog's particular wire coat and give clear information about handling experience, water activity and sensitivities before an appointment.
