The smaller French pointing type
The FCI lists the French Pointer of Pyrenean type as FCI 134, separately from the larger Gascogne type. Its standard begins by relating the two: the Pyrenean keeps the general characteristics of the Gascogne with reduced dimensions and a lighter form, then specifies the differences.
The Gascogne account places the shared regional background in south-western France and the central Pyrenees. Neither a regional name nor a modern photograph establishes an exact ancient pedigree. The two standards offer a more useful starting point: related working dogs whose recognised physical types should remain distinguishable.
Small differences that matter
The Pyrenean type is lighter in build, with tighter skin, less pendulous lips and a finer, shorter coat than the Gascogne. Similar brown-and-white colouring can distract from those structural differences. Read both standards rather than identifying a breed from a patch of colour alone.
For a companion, the practical questions go beyond the outline. How does the dog explore safely, what attracts its attention and how does it rest? This page leaves unsupported personality rankings out of the description and encourages observation of the individual instead.
Bring a clear history to the groomer
Tell the professional about previous handling, equipment noise and any veterinary restrictions. A short coat does not mean that unfamiliar touch or a new environment will be easy. Introduce tasks in small steps and agree a comfortable plan before work begins.

France is the recorded origin, not a measured claim about current global distribution. The linked Gascogne profile provides a useful comparison within the same regional story.
