Two appearances within one breed

The Chinese Crested Dog is FCI entry 288, covering both Hairless and Powder Puff. The Hairless has its familiar crest, socks and tail plume, while the Powder Puff carries a soft veil of hair over the body. They are forms within the same catalogue entry, not unrelated breeds to be counted twice.

The FCI records China as the origin, but its historical account acknowledges difficulty pinpointing the breed's beginnings. Stories connecting it with ancient households should not be treated as a precise documented pedigree. Its recognisable modern companion identity is clearer than confident claims about an unbroken ancient line.

Different surfaces, equally individual dogs

A Hairless dog's exposed skin makes it look dramatically different from a Powder Puff, yet appearance alone cannot reveal health or comfort. A photograph of one form should not be used as a complete guide to all Chinese Cresteds. The actual skin and coat need assessment.

The standard's cheerful character language is best used to begin a conversation about the individual. Ask how the dog responds to visitors, lifting, grooming tools and unfamiliar places. Small size does not remove the need for patient introductions, observation and breaks.

Match care to the form

Ask a professional to explain the maintenance a particular Powder Puff coat needs, while referring persistent skin changes and questions about exposed-skin products to a vet. A haircut, scrub or cosmetic treatment chosen solely by a breed photo can miss the actual problem.

The licensed natural photograph identifies the Hairless Chinese Crested Zucci High Virtue, known as Indy. It illustrates one dog and one form, not a health assessment. China in the origin filter records the catalogue's development context, not a measured statement about current global population distribution.
