Briquet means a middle-sized hound

In this breed's name, Briquet refers to medium size. The FCI account describes selection before the First World War by the Comte d'Elva, producing a more compact dog related to the Grand Griffon Vendeen. It is a distinct catalogue entry, not another name for either of the Vendeen bassets.

War repeatedly reduced the population. The standard records the type reappearing at Fontenay-le-Comte in the Vendee in 1946. That preservation story is a clearer historical anchor than an invented ancient pedigree. Its continuing description as a scent hound explains the emphasis on nose, stamina and voice.

Rugged, determined and still an individual

The intended outline is stocky and well proportioned, with a harsh coat, beard and eyebrows. The brows should leave the eyes visible. A rugged appearance is not evidence that the dog tolerates rough handling, and a show or outdoor photograph cannot establish temperament.

Ask practical questions about a particular dog's response to scent, wildlife and being called away from an interesting trail. Find out what helps it rest as well as what keeps it active. Those observations are more useful to an owner or groomer than a broad label such as determined.

Keep the coat ready for ordinary life

Outdoor activity can leave material caught beneath a shaggy surface. Build comfortable checks into the routine and ask for help before tangles tighten. Discuss texture, skin and what maintenance the owner can realistically do, rather than selecting a finish purely from a photograph.

The licensed natural image is identified by its creator as the Briquet Griffon Vendeen Unno du Sentier D'Aimeron. It shows one individual outdoors. France is the recorded country of origin; this profile does not claim a measured present-day distribution across countries.
