A sheepdog of the Italian Alps

The Bergamasco Sheepdog, or Cane da Pastore Bergamasco, is associated with Italy's Alpine and pre-Alpine regions, particularly the valleys around Bergamo. The FCI history describes dogs helping shepherds during seasonal movements between mountain pastures and the plains of the Po Valley.

The account records the first Italian studbook entries in 1891. That is a useful modern documentary milestone. Older paintings can show historical context, but they should not be treated as a complete pedigree connecting every modern dog to a particular distant ancestor.

Understand the flocks before choosing care

The distinctive jacket combines different textures, with broad felted flocks developing as the dog matures. A puppy and an older adult therefore need different discussions. The flocks are a specialised breed feature, not a general endorsement of painful tangles in other coat types.

The standard explicitly puts welfare limits on the coat: excessive weight and length should not restrict normal movement. It also calls for cleanliness and particular care around the beard, muzzle and ears. A dramatic photograph cannot establish that an individual's skin is comfortable or its coat is well managed.

Find experienced help, then agree a routine

Before any major coat work, speak to a professional familiar with the breed and explain the dog's age, coat development and handling experience. The general coat-care guide linked below can help frame questions about comfort, but its ordinary anti-tangle advice is not a method for creating or dismantling Bergamasco flocks.

The licensed natural photograph identifies a Bergamasco on an Italian Alpine pasture. It shows a mature flocked presentation and one individual, not a compulsory amount of hair. Italy in the origin filter describes breed development, while a modern care plan must be based on the actual dog.
