A southern French hound in a smaller outline

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne belongs to the French scent-hound family. The FCI history describes renewed development at the end of the nineteenth century, with hunters working to retain the qualities of dogs associated with southern France. Its basset outline is substantial without being intended to look excessively heavy.

The word bleu describes the visual effect of black and white mottling. It is not a claim that the hair is a uniform blue. Larger dark patches and tan markings help create the familiar appearance, while the hanging ears and low-set body complete the recognisable outline.

A voice and a nose worth discussing

This is a working-hound story, and the standard emphasises scenting ability, activity and a strong voice. Those are useful topics for a prospective owner's questions. Ask what the individual does on discovering a trail, how it settles at home and how it copes when separated from familiar company.

Grooming introduces different challenges from an outdoor walk. Describe experience of ear-area contact, paw handling and drying. Keep introductions gradual and reward comfort instead of assuming an affectionate dog should tolerate any touch.

Simple-looking hair still needs attention

The close coat is easier to see through than a long woolly one, but maintenance should still include skin and paw checks. Ask a groomer which gentle brush suits the texture and how to dry the coat comfortably after a necessary bath.
