At Washington’s Rock Creek Park, the National Park Service listed a free B.A.R.K. Ranger session for 10 a.m. on October 31. Costumes were encouraged. Underneath the Halloween invitation was a useful idea for year-round walks. The program asks visitors to bag pet waste, keep dogs leashed, respect wildlife and learn where pets are allowed. The listing is now historical, so use the park’s current information to plan a visit. Rock Creek Park event listing
Start at the map, finish at the bin
The most consequential choice often happens at home. Look up your intended route, including the return leg, for pet rules and current closures. Pack enough bags to bring waste out if the trail has no bin. Carry the leash in your hand rather than leaving it in the car until you see other visitors. Give wildlife space and consider turning back if the route forces an encounter.
A dog doesn’t need a badge to benefit from those habits. The program gives everyone holding the leash the same four jobs, which is especially useful when different family members take different turns. For another park, check that park’s pet rules before you travel. A program shared across parks doesn’t make their trail access interchangeable. National Park Service B.A.R.K. Ranger program
