Tess had a plan for the morning. It involved the seafront path, her person's walking shoes, and all the interesting smells that waited beyond the front door.
She watched the little bag being packed. Water, a bowl, and the blue blanket went inside. Tess gave the bag a careful sniff. Nothing had been forgotten.
Outside, the sky was bright, but the wind had its own ideas. It rattled the garden gate and lifted the corner of her person's coat. Tess stopped beside the doorway, ears tipping back, and looked up.
They went only as far as the broad path near the sheltered gardens. Beyond the railings, the flags snapped and fluttered. The longer walk could wait. Her person paused, looked at Tess, and turned towards the quieter streets instead.
Tess followed. A different route was still a route, and this one contained a very promising hedge.
Around the next corner was a small enclosed garden. The walls softened the wind. There were pale stones under their feet, a wooden bench, and a patch of sunlight that seemed to have been put there especially for a dog.
Her person spread the blue blanket beside the bench. Tess stood on it, turned once, and settled with a happy little sigh. A bowl of water appeared. Nobody was in a hurry.
A sparrow landed on the far wall. Tess watched it quietly. Somewhere nearby, a door clicked shut, and somebody laughed. The flags were still moving beyond the garden, but here the leaves made only a gentle whisper.
Her person took a book from the bag. Tess had expected a long walk. Her person had expected one too. Instead, they had found a sunny corner and enough time to enjoy it.
After a while, they took the short way home. Tess paused at the promising hedge again. It was just as interesting on the return journey.
Back inside, her harness came off and the blue blanket went beside the window. Tess rested her chin on its folded edge. Her person sat nearby with the same book.
The morning had not followed the plan. It had followed Tess, the weather, and a small change of mind. And somehow, that had made room for exactly the sort of adventure they needed.
