Pip had appointed himself the keeper of the front door. From his soft bed in the hallway, he could hear a key turn, a coat rustle, or the tiniest step outside. Most mornings, nothing more exciting than a neighbour's shopping bag passed by.

This Tuesday, the doorbell rang just as Pip was settling down. His person answered the door. A small parcel stood on the mat, neat and square, with a ribbon of brown tape across its top.

Pip stretched his long grey legs and came to investigate. His person held the box away from his nose while checking the label. Then she smiled.

This parcel belonged to the neighbour upstairs. Pip looked from the box to the stairs. That was a different sort of morning.

His person put on her shoes and clipped his lead to his green harness. They stepped into the shared hallway, where daylight fell through a tall window and the whole building seemed unusually quiet. At the first landing, Pip paused.

Someone had placed a fern beside the window. Its leaves made soft shadows across the wall. His person waited, holding the parcel in one arm.

Pip checked the air, looked up at her, and carried on beside her towards the next door. She knocked gently. Nothing happened.

Pip sat down. Somewhere behind the door, a chair moved, followed by slow footsteps. The neighbour appeared with a surprised smile.

She had been watching for that parcel all morning, and had started to think it might not arrive. The box went safely into her hands. Pip was not asked to carry it, balance it, or do anything clever.

He simply stood beside his person while the two neighbours talked. The upstairs neighbour thanked them, then reached for a folded blanket on a shelf. Would Pip like something soft for his hallway bed?

Back downstairs, the blanket was laid over Pip's cushion. It was plain and green, with one corner that would not quite stay flat. Pip walked around it once.

He lowered his nose, nudged the troublesome corner, and turned in a small circle before settling down. The next sound outside was only another shopping bag. Pip lifted one ear and left the other exactly where it was.

His person sat nearby with a cup of tea. The door was quiet again, but the morning had changed: a parcel had reached its home, two neighbours had shared a moment, and Pip had found a softer place to rest. Local care, happier dogs.
