Rain tapped the kitchen window, and Nell watched every drop as if it had somewhere important to be. Her person stood beside the back door with a lead in one hand and a towel in the other. Nell took one hopeful step forward. Then the wind shook the garden gate, and she took two thoughtful steps back.

There was no hurry. Her person put the lead down and sat beside the door. Nell looked at the garden, looked at the towel, and decided to investigate the towel first. It smelled of the cupboard, a little sunshine, and home. She placed one white paw on its corner.

Outside, a delivery van stopped. Two knocks sounded at the front door. Nell lifted her ears. Her person collected a small parcel, returned to the kitchen, and left the unopened box well out of reach. Nell had a much more interesting question. Had the rain finished yet?

It had not. But the wind had softened, and there was a sheltered path beside the house. Her person opened the back door a little. Nell waited, sniffed the cool air, and stepped outside when she was ready. They walked together beneath the edge of the porch, where the rain made little silver lines beyond their feet.

A leaf sailed across the paving. Nell watched it disappear under a flower pot. Somewhere on the other side of the fence, a blackbird sang a very short song. This was not the long walk they had imagined, but there were still things worth noticing.

Back inside, the spare towel was waiting. Her person let Nell sniff it again, then gently dried one paw. Nell shifted her weight and looked away. They paused. After a moment she moved closer, and they continued slowly, with another pause whenever she needed one.

When they finished, Nell carried the towel's corner towards her bed. Her person laughed and spread a clean, dry towel beside it. Nell turned around twice, settled down, and watched the window. The rain could carry on with its busy afternoon. She had found a warm place to wait.

Later, the clouds opened into a patch of blue. The lead came out again, and this time Nell was already by the door. The big walk could begin. The spare towel would be ready when they came home.
