Watch Mabel’s story
A little patch of sunshine, a determined Schnauzer and a quiet choice about where to settle. This original GroomNear story is narrated by George, with gentle scene animation and sound.
The story
Mabel put one paw in the sunshine, and stopped. The rest of her was still in the shade. Something had happened to her favourite spot.
Yesterday, the light had stretched across her mat like a little golden blanket. Today, there was only a thin bright line beside the window. Mabel looked at the mat, then at her person, who was folding towels.
One white towel. One green towel. Another white towel. Nobody seemed to understand that the morning needed fixing.
Mabel followed the bright line around a wicker basket. And there it was. A lovely patch of sunshine, hiding on the wrong side. The basket wasn't stealing the light. It was simply standing in the way.
She sat beside it. She looked at the basket. She looked at her person. Then she waited, with the serious patience of a dog who had explained everything very clearly.
At last, the towels stopped moving. Her person followed Mabel's gaze, smiled, and lifted the basket onto the low table. A broad patch of light opened across the floor.
Mabel stepped onto her mat, turned twice, and folded herself into the warmest part. There. The morning was back where it belonged.
The towels rustled again. Across the room, her person sat beside the chair. Mabel opened one eye. The sunny mat was comfortable. Very comfortable. But the familiar foot was a long way away.
She stretched, stood up, and crossed the room. Then she settled beside the chair, where a hand came down to rest gently near her shoulder.
There was no sunshine on that bit of floor. Just a soft towel, a familiar scent, and somebody close by. Mabel let out a little breath. The sun could keep her mat warm. For now, she had found a better spot.
