Finn knew exactly where his favourite ball belonged. It belonged beside the park bench, near his person's muddy shoes, ready for the next little roll across the grass. On Monday morning, however, the ball was not there. Finn looked under the bench. He looked behind one shoe. Then he looked at his person with a very serious question.
They had only stopped for a drink of water. A bicycle had passed, a pigeon had strutted by, and somewhere a gardener had laughed. The ball could not possibly have gone very far. His person clipped the lead back on and joined the investigation.
Finn began with the bench leg. There was a crisp packet nearby, but his person moved it safely out of reach. There was an interesting patch of damp grass, which required a pause. There was also a squirrel, high in a tree. Finn watched it for a moment, then remembered the important matter of the missing ball.
They walked slowly along the edge of the path. His person looked beneath the leaves while Finn checked the air with his nose. No ball. At a flower bed, a small yellow shape appeared between two pots. Finn's ears lifted. His person leaned closer. It was a fallen flower, exactly the wrong sort of treasure.
They returned to the bench. Finn sat down with a thoughtful sigh. Perhaps the ball had decided to go on its own walk. Perhaps it had joined the pigeon. His person knelt beside him and looked at the ground from a much lower angle.
There it was. Under the far end of the bench, tucked behind a wooden support, with only a thin green edge showing. Finn had been standing almost beside it all along. His person reached in carefully and brought it back into the daylight.
Finn did not need a grand celebration. He pressed his nose gently against the familiar ball, then stood beside his person with his tail making a small, happy sweep. They walked to a quiet clear patch of grass, away from the busy path. One short roll was quite enough to make the morning feel right again.
When it was time to go home, the ball went into the bag before anybody moved. Finn checked the bag once, just to be certain. His person laughed. Some adventures are about travelling a long way. This one was about looking again, asking for help, and finding something precious close to where you started.
