Dot had a plan for Saturday. Out of the front door, across the little square, through the park, and home for breakfast. At least, that was her person's plan. Dot's plan began with the corner of a very ordinary brick wall.
She stopped. Her nose moved left, then right. Her person looked at the clock, then at Dot. The wall had been there yesterday. Surely it could not have much more to say. Dot disagreed. Today it seemed to be an entire newspaper.
A bicycle rolled past. Dot stepped closer to her person and watched it go. They waited beside the wall until the path was quiet again. Then, instead of hurrying her towards the gate, her person loosened the lead and let her choose the next few steps.
Dot chose a dandelion. Then a bench leg. Then a patch of grass that required serious investigation. The big path through the middle of the park was busy, so they took the smaller path beside the flower beds. It was the long way round, and somehow that made it feel like a better morning.
At the next corner, a gardener was sweeping. Dot paused at the gentle scrape of the broom. The gardener stopped, smiled from a distance, and gave them room to pass. Dot did not need to say hello to everybody. She walked on when she was ready.
They reached a quiet bench. Her person sat down and offered some water. Dot rested beside the seat, looking perfectly pleased with a journey that had covered almost no distance at all. A sparrow landed on the path, thought better of it, and disappeared into a hedge. Dot watched, but stayed beside her person.
On the way home, they passed the brick wall again. This time Dot gave it one short sniff. The news had apparently not changed. Her person laughed and tucked the clock away. Breakfast could wait another minute.
Dot had not discovered a mountain, won a race, or travelled very far. She had found a quieter path, a comfortable pause, and someone willing to notice what mattered to her. Some mornings, the best part of a walk is taking the time to share it.
