Start with the countries your dog has been in during the six months before US entry. Under the CDC pathway for dogs that have only been in countries free of dog rabies or considered low risk, the dog must look healthy on arrival, be at least six months old and have a microchip. You need the CDC Dog Import Form receipt. Check the CDC’s current risk list and instructions for the entire itinerary. Time spent in a high-risk country changes the pathway, even if the last leg starts in Canada or Mexico. CDC requirements for low-risk routes
Make two appointments on paper before you travel
On one side of the page, list the entry rules for your destination and any appointments needed before departure. On the other, list the evidence you’ll need for the return. USDA APHIS has separate New World screwworm rules for dogs arriving from affected countries. APHIS currently lists Mexico as affected, and its certification requirement applies to eligible US-origin dogs returning from Mexico too. Find out how and where you’ll obtain the required inspection and certification before booking the trip.
Save each official page with the date you checked it and confirm the latest requirements near departure. Keep your documents accessible at the crossing. A form for the outbound journey and the CDC receipt for the return answer different checks. USDA APHIS dog import and screwworm requirements
