A breed standard is a starting point, not your dog's personality

A breed standard offers a vocabulary for describing a breed. It is useful when comparing the language used by a registry with the dog in front of you, but it cannot provide a complete prediction of that dog's behaviour, health or comfort with grooming.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists the Poodle under standard number 172. The English version is dated 5 April 2024, with the official valid standard dated 20 March 2024. It describes, among other features, a characteristic curly or corded coat and recognises several size varieties. The FCI's catalogue is one registry's reference: other registries may organise breeds and varieties differently.

A description is not a personal guarantee

A standard may include words about a breed's typical character. They can help explain what the standard is trying to describe; they cannot tell a groomer how a particular dog will react to a dryer or a stranger. The dog's experiences, surroundings and present needs matter when planning handling.

A 2022 genomics and owner-survey study found substantial behavioural variation within breeds and cautioned against treating breed as a reliable predictor of an individual dog's behaviour. Its data combined genetic analysis with owners' reports; those reports are not a clinical examination or a promise about every dog. Average tendencies and individual outcomes answer different questions.

Bring the individual into the appointment

A useful grooming conversation begins with the dog who will be there. Tell the groomer about known handling sensitivities, previous appointments and any health concerns you are comfortable sharing. Ask how the groomer can assess the coat and plan breaks or a gentler introduction. If the dog appears in pain or there is a skin concern, discuss it with a veterinary professional.

The standard can be a starting point for learning about a coat; it does not choose a haircut, establish a dog's wellbeing or certify a business. GroomNear's breed atlas provides source-linked background without linking a breed to an endorsement of a particular groomer.
